NUCCA (Upper Cervical Care) : A Gentle Correction

We at Balance Chiropractic Center use a controlled, light contact on the first upper neck vertebra of the spine to help align and restore balance to the spine. Even though it seems that we are primarily concerned with the neck, the effects of the correction influences not only the whole spine but also all the muscles and body systems. This is because the NUCCA procedure that we use influences one of the highest control centers. That would be the brain stem and the central nervous system.

The upper neck vertebra or CI, also known as the Atlas, is a small donut-like bone located on top of the spine and the base of the skull. When the spine is subjected to stress, the Atlas can become misaligned. Our focus at our clinic is to correct this misalignment. The technical term for this misalignment is Atlas Subluxation Complex (ASC). Symptoms such as pain in the back and neck muscles (one or both sides), headaches, dizziness, loss of sleep, loss of energy, hip pain or shoulder pain are commonly associated with this condition. However there are a variety of other symptoms that also accompany ASC that are too numerous to list.

The nerves in our spinal column are very sensitive to pressure and stress. When the spine becomes misaligned sufficiently it stresses the nerves, compromises their normal impulses and changes function throughout the body.

The NUCCA adjustments we deliver at Balance Chiropractic Center depend upon precise mathematical calculations, physics, and biomechanics. X-ray films are a critical part of ensuring the spinal correction is accurate and successful. The doctor will take pre-adjustment x-ray films from different angles focusing on the atlas vertebra. These x-rays determine the direction and degree of spinal misalignment and how to properly restore the spine to normal.

All this is accomplished without forceful movement of the head and neck, therefore the patient does not hear cracking or popping sounds in the neck during the adjustment sessions.

After the adjustment, there is a short resting period at our clinic which is sometimes followed by a light or deep tissue massage or rehabilitative exercises depending on your needs. These will allow the body to hold the corrections for a longer period.
